Topic:  Energy analysis and modeling of fan-powered VAV terminal units

Speaker:  Mr. Peng "Solomon" Yin

Abstract: Both series and parallel fan-powered VAV terminal units are used in commercial buildings. It is widely believed that parallel units are more energy efficient compared with series units because of intermittent fan operation. However, laboratory measurements and field studies discovered that inherent air leakage from parallel units to plenum space may offset the fan energy savings relative to series units. Also, traditional fan-powered VAV terminal units are equipped with single speed fans driven by permanent split capacity (PSC) motors. Nowadays, an increasing number of manufacturers use more energy efficient electronically commutated motors (ECMs) in fan-powered terminal units with variable speed control. In order to quantify the energy benefit of ECMs and advanced fan speed control, a series of research projects sponsored by ASHRAE, AHRI, and private industries were conducted over the past several years. This talk will summarize the major findings in the past research. These results can be used by design engineers for proper evaluation of building performance with fan-powered VAV terminal units.

 

Bio: Peng “Solomon” Yin is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University in 2010 and 2015, respectively. In 2016, Dr. Yin joined UL Lafayette, where he is teaching courses in fluid mechanics, HVAC&R, and building energy simulation.Dr. Yin is active and experienced in conducting research in the field of building energy. His previous research projects include experimental evaluation and modeling performance of HVAC&R equipment and building energy simulation, with project sponsors being ASHRAE, SouthernCalifornia Edison, AHRI, and numerous private industries. His research work has been published in 12 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers since 2014. Dr. Yin is an associate member of ASHRAE.
